If you buy without them, you may discover the problem at your first start: high vibration, a trip, and a strip-down that wipes out the savings you made on the purchase. A failed bearing can also damage the rotor, which turns a bargain into a long, expensive outage.
USP&E Helps You Check Used GT Bearing and Vibration Evidence
We know that a low price is only a good deal when the machine runs smoothly after it is installed. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers review vibration history, bearing records and alignment data on used gas turbines before buyers commit their money. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
You do not need to be a vibration specialist to protect yourself. You need to know which records to ask for, what a healthy history looks like, and when a missing file should stop the deal.
Ask for Vibration Trend History, Not a Snapshot
A single vibration reading taken on a good day tells you very little. Ask for trend data from the control system or condition monitoring covering the last operating years, with bearing vibration, bearing metal temperatures and thrust position where the package measures them.
Look for steady trends that stay well inside the alarm limits in the maintenance manual. Step changes after an outage, slow upward drifts or readings that jump with load or temperature all deserve an explanation from the seller.
Ask for the trip and alarm log too. Repeated high-vibration alarms, bearing temperature trips or thrust alarms tell you more about the unit’s history than any sales sheet. If the logs are missing, treat that as a risk, not a detail.
Check Bearing Inspection and Alignment Records
Request records from the last major outage: journal and thrust bearing inspections, clearance measurements, photos and any bearings replaced. Signs of wiping, scoring or uneven contact point to past problems with lubrication, alignment or rotor balance.
Review alignment records between the turbine, the load gearbox if fitted, and the generator. A train that needed repeated realignment may sit on a foundation or baseplate that moved, and that problem can travel with the package to your site.
Link the bearing evidence to the lube oil history. Oil analysis showing bearing metals, water or varnish is a warning sign, and so is a lube oil system that was left undrained during storage. Bearings and oil should tell the same story.
Price the Risk and Compare Your Options
If the evidence is incomplete, budget for an inspection that opens the bearings, checks clearances and confirms alignment, followed by a run test with vibration monitoring before final payment. Build those costs into the deal instead of finding them after delivery.
Compare the unit fairly. A remanufactured GE Frame 6B with fresh bearings and documented alignment, or other used/new gas turbines with full records, may cost more up front but less once risk is counted. When your load is smaller, natural gas engines/stations are another route.
Buyers building compute capacity face the same test with higher stakes. Under hyperscale EPC/O&M, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute are accepted on vibration baselines and bearing records, and New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA is handed over with its own baseline so every later reading has a reference. Whichever gas turbine generators you choose, insist on the same evidence.
Global Offices Behind Your Used Generator Programme
Your plant does not run on head-office time. USP&E anchors your used gas turbine purchase in Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineering, project controls and commissioning support sit, close to the African sites USP&E has powered for years.
When preserved used gas turbines and gensets must be financed, sourced or shipped, London (162-168 Regent Street) structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) supports China supply chain and manufacturing.
For used turbine purchases, Johannesburg and Cape Town engineers can review vibration and bearing files, while Colorado Springs and Knoxville teams inspect units held at US sites before you commit. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. One accountable team behind 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
USP&E Track Record for Used Generator
You want proof that USP&E has checked, refurbished and delivered used turbines that run as promised. These projects show that record.
- USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
- MAN redeployment, Iraq: USP&E moved a stranded 32 MW MAN plant, plus two surplus MAN generators, across four countries to an industrial buyer facing 12 to 18 month lead times for new engines. Read the case study.
- Zondereinde platinum mine, South Africa: USP&E supplied, packaged and serviced six zero-hour surplus Wabtec GE16V250 gensets, giving the mine 25 MW of base-load power through Eskom load shedding. Read the case study.
HowTo: Check Used GT Bearing and Vibration Evidence
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share the seller’s vibration, bearing and trip records under NDA. 2. Receive an evidence gap list and inspection scope. 3. Inspect, run test and buy, then trend the unit under accountable O&M.
- Ask for vibration trend history across the last operating years, not a single reading.
- Request trip and alarm logs that mention vibration, bearing temperature or thrust position.
- Check bearing inspection, replacement and clearance records from the last major outage.
- Review alignment records between the turbine, gearbox and generator.
- Compare the unit with a remanufactured GE Frame 6B or other used/new gas turbines on the same evidence.
- Price bearing work, alignment and a run test before you sign.

FAQ: Used GT Bearing and Vibration Evidence
Why does vibration history matter on a used gas turbine?
USP&E treats vibration history as one of the clearest signs of a used turbine’s mechanical health. Trends over several years show whether bearings, alignment and rotor balance have stayed stable. A single reading can hide problems that a long record would reveal, so always ask for trends.
What bearing records should a seller provide?
USP&E asks for journal and thrust bearing inspection reports, clearance measurements, photos and replacement records from the last major outage. You should also see bearing temperature trends and any related trips. Gaps in these records mean you should budget for an inspection before payment.
What do trip and alarm logs reveal?
USP&E reads trip and alarm logs to find repeated vibration, bearing temperature or thrust events. Several similar trips suggest an unsolved problem, even if the unit ran afterwards. Logs also show how the unit was operated, which helps you judge the evidence behind any sales claim.
Should you insist on a run test before buying?
USP&E recommends a run test with vibration monitoring whenever the unit and site allow it. A test under load shows how bearings, alignment and balance behave today. If a run test is not possible, open inspection of bearings and clearances becomes even more important to you.
Where are USP&E’s offices that support used turbine buyers?
USP&E supports used turbine buyers from Johannesburg and Cape Town, where engineers review evidence files and plan inspections. Colorado Springs and Knoxville reach units held in the US, London handles contracts and finance, and Wuxi follows up China-made parts and balance-of-plant for your purchase.
Has USP&E delivered refurbished gas turbines before?
USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also cover NEOM, where USP&E supplied zero-hour gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface for the client. You can read each case study yourself.
Is USP&E a broker for used gas turbines?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that inspects, refurbishes, installs and maintains turbines with its own people, so the team that reviews your bearing and vibration evidence also answers for the unit once it runs on your site.
How fast can USP&E respond to an evidence review?
USP&E can start reviewing a seller’s vibration trends, bearing reports and trip logs as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag missing records and warning signs first, so you can ask the seller the right questions before the deal moves forward.
