If you skip the lube oil evidence, you risk wiped bearings, a seized load gear or a trip on low oil pressure in your first month. That means downtime, an expensive teardown and a turbine that was never the bargain it seemed. Good evidence lets you avoid that risk or price it properly.
USP&E Helps You Read the Oil Before You Pay
We know you want a fair price and a turbine that runs. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers inspect used turbines, read the oil history and tell you plainly what it means. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
You do not have to be an oil chemist to buy well. You need the right records, a few targeted checks and an engineer who will explain what the evidence says about the bearings and gears you cannot see.
Ask for the Full Oil History
Start with the oil analysis history: laboratory reports with dates, running hours and the sample point. Look at trends, not single results. Rising metals can mean bearing or gear wear. Water, high particle counts or rising acid number point to contamination or ageing oil. Gaps in the record are a finding in themselves.
Ask for records of oil changes, top-ups and filter changes. Frequent top-ups suggest leaks. Filters changed on high differential pressure may point to contamination. Any varnish event, oil cooler failure or water ingress should be written up with the fix that followed.
Compare the history with how the unit was used. A turbine that ran long base-load hours with good oil care can be a better buy than a low-hour unit that sat idle with wet oil. The same evidence-first approach applies when you browse used gas turbines or other stock.
Inspect the Hardware Behind the Records
Inspect the reservoir, coolers, pumps and filter housings, or ask for recent photos and inspection reports if the unit is far away. Look for sludge, rust, varnish deposits and signs of water. Check that the main, auxiliary and emergency pumps all run and that their pressures match the records.
Review bearing drain temperatures and any trips linked to lube oil pressure or temperature. A unit with a history of high drain temperatures may have bearing damage or cooler problems. Ask whether the emergency DC pump has been tested, because it protects the bearings during a coast-down without AC power.
Check the oil type and the fill volume, and ask what oil is in the unit now. Mixing oils or running the wrong grade can cause foaming and varnish. These details also tell you how carefully the turbine was looked after overall, and the brand overview in our guide to industrial generator brands can help you compare what to expect.
Compare, Price and Plan the Flush
Put the lube oil evidence beside the other checks: borescope, vibration, hours and starts, controls and the generator. A remanufactured GE Frame 6B with a clean oil record and documented work is often easier to accept than a cheaper unit with gaps. Weigh all used/new gas turbines on the same evidence.
Price what the evidence shows. A full oil change, cooler cleaning or bearing inspection has a cost, and that cost belongs in your offer. Plan a lube oil flush and a fresh oil analysis at commissioning, and make final acceptance depend on clean results.
The same discipline protects every kind of plant, from gas turbine generators and natural gas engines/stations to hyperscale EPC/O&M work where AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute must run without surprises, including the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA. If you are also weighing reciprocating sets, our sister site on industrial used diesel gensets covers that side.
USP&E Teams Behind Your Used Generator Site
Remote sites need people who know frontier work. USP&E runs your used gas turbine purchase from Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineers plan mobilisation, spares and site supervision for projects far from the nearest service shop.
Further back in the chain, London (162-168 Regent Street) handles financing and contract structure for preserved used gas turbines and gensets; Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) secure US equipment, parts and engineering support; and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) keeps Chinese-made switchgear and balance-of-plant moving.
For used turbine oil checks, Johannesburg and Cape Town engineers can review laboratory reports, inspect the reservoir and coolers, and plan the commissioning flush wherever the unit is installed. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. That team has carried 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.

FAQ: Used GT Lube Oil System Evidence
What lube oil records should I ask for before buying a used gas turbine?
USP&E asks for laboratory oil analysis reports with dates and running hours, oil and filter change records, top-up logs and reports on any contamination, varnish or cooler failure. Trends matter more than single results, and missing records are a finding that should affect your price or your terms.
What do metals in an oil analysis mean?
USP&E reads rising metals as a sign of wear. The specific metals point to bearings, gears or other parts. A stable low level is normal, but a rising trend, especially with high particle counts or water, deserves a closer look before you agree to buy the turbine.
Can a lube oil flush fix a contaminated system?
USP&E uses flushing to clean a system of particles, water and old oil, and it often restores good oil condition. A flush cannot repair bearings or gears that were already damaged, so the oil history and inspections still matter before you commit to the purchase.
Why does the emergency DC lube oil pump matter?
USP&E checks the emergency DC pump because it keeps oil flowing to the bearings if AC power fails during a shutdown. An untested or failed pump can let bearings run dry while the rotor coasts down, causing serious damage. Ask for test records before you buy.
Where are USP&E’s offices for used turbine inspections?
USP&E supports used equipment buyers from Johannesburg and Cape Town, with engineers who can inspect units across Africa. London structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville support US turbine sourcing and engineering, and Wuxi follows up equipment made in China.
Has USP&E delivered used gas turbines before?
USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also include zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 units supplied to NEOM and a stranded 32 MW MAN plant redeployed to Iraq.
Is USP&E a broker for used turbines?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E inspects, refurbishes, installs and maintains turbines with its own engineers, so the team that reads your oil evidence is the same team that refurbishes, commissions and maintains the unit, and answers for it afterwards.
How fast can USP&E respond to an oil evidence review?
USP&E can start reading your oil reports and maintenance records as soon as you share them. Engineers flag the most serious concerns first, so you can ask the seller the right questions, and request extra tests, before the deal moves forward.
Buy the Turbine, Not the Hidden Damage
Read the oil evidence and you buy a turbine you understand, at a price that reflects its real condition. Skip it and you may pay for bearings and gears that are already failing. USP&E will help you check, price and commission with confidence.
