Cheap Used Generators

Used GT Starting System Evidence

A used gas turbine that cannot start reliably is not a bargain. The starting system, whether an electric motor, a diesel cranking engine or a static start, has to spin the rotor up to self-sustaining speed every time you need power. On many surplus units it is the part nobody checked.

If you buy without starting evidence, you may find out at your first commissioning attempt: a failed start, a slipping clutch or a seized turning gear. That can mean weeks of delay, a hunt for obsolete parts and a turbine that sits idle while you keep paying for temporary power.

USP&E Helps You Check Used GT Starting System Evidence

We know that a cheap turbine only pays off when it starts on the first command and keeps doing so. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers review start records and starting system history on used gas turbines so buyers can trust each unit to start when it matters. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

You do not have to strip the starting system to judge it. You need the right records, a clear picture of what parts are fitted, and a plan to prove the start before your money is gone.

Know Which Starting System the Unit Uses

Start by identifying the starting system. Older heavy-duty units often use a diesel cranking engine or an electric motor driving through a torque converter and clutch. Others use a static frequency converter that runs the generator as a motor. Each type has its own weak points and its own spares.

Ask what is fitted today, not what the original brochure says. Starting systems are often modified over a unit’s life, and a package that was converted from diesel cranking to electric starting will have different drawings, controls and spares from the original.

Check the turning gear as well. It rotates the rotor slowly during cool-down and before a start, and a unit that has sat without turning for a long time may have a bowed rotor or seized gear. Both problems can stop a start before it begins.

Ask for Start Records and Failed Starts

Request start records from the control system: successful starts, failed starts and the reason for each failure. A unit with a long run of clean starts is a good sign. A pattern of failed starts, even if each one was cleared, points to a problem that may still be there.

Ask for maintenance records for the starter motor or cranking engine, the torque converter, the clutch and the turning gear. Look for repeated repairs, parts replaced without a root cause and long gaps without inspection.

Check that starting system drawings, settings and spares come with the unit. Clutches, torque converter parts and cranking engine spares can be hard to find for older packages. Missing spares are a cost you should count before you agree the price.

Prove the Start and Compare Your Options

Whenever the unit and site allow, witness a start sequence before final payment, or write a start test into commissioning acceptance. A start shows how the starting system, purge, ignition and acceleration work together today, which no record can fully prove.

Compare units fairly. A remanufactured GE Frame 6B with a rebuilt starting system and documented tests, or other used/new gas turbines with clean start records, may cost more up front but less once risk is counted. When your load is smaller, natural gas engines/stations can also be the faster route.

Compute buyers care about starts even more, because standby and black start duty depend on them. In hyperscale EPC/O&M work, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute are accepted on proven start reliability, and New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA is commissioned with recorded start tests. Ask the same of any gas turbine generators you buy.

  • NEOM, Saudi Arabia: USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface, and the client reported savings of over $10 million. Read the case study.

HowTo: Check Used GT Starting System Evidence

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share the seller’s start records, maintenance files and drawings under NDA. 2. Receive an evidence gap list and a start test plan. 3. Prove the start, buy with confidence, then maintain the unit under accountable O&M.

  1. Identify the starting system on the unit: electric motor, diesel cranking engine, static start or other.
  2. Ask for start records showing successful starts, failed starts and the reasons.
  3. Request maintenance records for the starter, torque converter, clutch and turning gear.
  4. Check that starting system spares and drawings come with the unit.
  5. Compare the unit with a remanufactured GE Frame 6B or other used/new gas turbines on the same evidence.
  6. Witness a start sequence or plan one at commissioning before final payment.

FAQ: Used GT Starting System Evidence

Why does the starting system matter on a used gas turbine?

USP&E treats the starting system as critical because it must bring the rotor to self-sustaining speed on every start. A weak starter, slipping clutch or seized turning gear can stop commissioning, delay your project and leave you paying for temporary power while parts are found.

What start records should a seller provide?

USP&E asks for successful and failed start records from the control system, with the reason for each failure. You should also see maintenance history for the starter, torque converter, clutch and turning gear. Repeated failed starts point to a problem that may still be present.

What is a turning gear and why check it?

USP&E checks the turning gear because it rotates the rotor slowly during cool-down and before starts. A unit left without turning for a long time may have a bowed rotor or seized gear. Either problem can stop a start and needs inspection before you commit.

Should you witness a start before buying?

USP&E recommends witnessing a start before final payment whenever the unit and site allow. A real start shows how the starting system, purge, ignition and acceleration work together. If that is not possible, write a start test into commissioning acceptance so the risk stays with the seller.

Where are USP&E’s offices that support used turbine buyers?

USP&E supports used turbine buyers from Colorado Springs and Knoxville for units held in the US, and from Johannesburg and Cape Town for African projects. London handles contracts and finance, and Wuxi follows up spare parts and packages made in China.

Has USP&E delivered refurbished turbines before?

USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. The public NEOM case study adds zero-hour gas turbines supplied by USP&E as the single technical and commercial interface. You can review both records before you choose a unit.

Is USP&E a broker for used gas turbines?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that inspects, refurbishes, installs and maintains turbines with its own people, so the team that checks your starting evidence also answers for the unit when it starts on your site.

How fast can USP&E respond to a starting system review?

USP&E can start reviewing a seller’s start records, maintenance files and drawings as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag missing records and repeated failed starts first, so you can press the seller for answers before the deal moves on.

Buy a Used Turbine That Starts Every Time

Check the starting evidence and your used turbine starts on command, on schedule and when you need it. Skip it and commissioning can stall on a failed start and a missing part. USP&E will help you check, test and buy with confidence.
