Used GT Coupling and Alignment Evidence

A used gas turbine is a train of heavy machines joined by couplings: turbine, load gear and generator. If those shafts were misaligned for years, the damage sits in bearings, gear teeth and coupling parts you cannot see on a walk-around. A low price can hide a train that has been fighting itself.

If you skip the coupling and alignment evidence, you risk high vibration, bearing failures and a trip in your first weeks of running. That means downtime, a teardown you did not budget for and a turbine that costs more than a better unit would have. Good evidence lets you avoid the risk or price it fairly.

USP&E Helps You Read the Alignment Story Before You Pay

We know you want a good price and a turbine that runs smoothly. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers inspect, refurbish, align and commission used turbines, so we know what the records should show. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

You do not need to be an alignment specialist to buy well. You need the right reports, a few targeted questions and an engineer who will tell you plainly what the evidence means.

Ask for the Alignment Reports

Start with the latest alignment report for each coupling in the train. It should show the date, the method used, the readings, the targets and the final values left on the machine. Laser or dial readings both work if they are recorded properly. A report with no targets or no final values is a weak report.

Ask whether the targets allowed for thermal growth. Turbines and generators grow by different amounts when hot, so cold alignment is set with planned offsets. If the seller cannot say what offsets were used or why, the train may have run misaligned at full temperature for a long time.

Look at the history too. Frequent re-alignments, shims that keep changing or notes about soft feet and foundation movement all point to a deeper problem. The same evidence-first rule applies when you browse used turbine listings or compare offers.

Check the Couplings and the Vibration History

Ask for coupling inspection records: coupling type, condition of flexible elements or gear teeth, bolting, lubrication where it applies and any parts replaced. Worn gear couplings, cracked discs or fretting marks are signs of misalignment or overload. Missing bolts records are a gap worth asking about.

Then read the vibration history beside the alignment record. Misalignment often shows as high axial vibration or strong readings at twice running speed. Rising bearing temperatures on one side of a coupling can tell the same story. If the vibration improved after a re-alignment, that is useful proof the problem was fixed.

Ask how the unit was disconnected for sale. A train that was split without recording as-found alignment loses useful evidence. Our turbine refurbishment teams always record as-found values before work starts, because that is what tells you how the unit really ran.

Price the Findings and Plan a Proper Re-Alignment

Put the alignment evidence beside the other checks: borescope, oil history, hours and starts, controls and generator tests. A remanufactured GE Frame 6B with a clean alignment record and documented coupling work is often a safer buy than a cheaper unit with gaps. Judge all used/new gas turbines on the same evidence.

Whatever the records show, plan a full re-alignment at installation, with thermal growth offsets, soft foot checks and recorded final values. Make acceptance depend on vibration readings after a run at load. Coupling parts with doubtful condition should be priced into your offer or replaced before start-up.

The same discipline protects gas turbine generators in every role, from natural gas engines/stations replacements to AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute run under hyperscale EPC/O&M, and it will apply to the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA. USP&E Track Record for Used Generator

You want proof that USP&E knows how to inspect, refurbish and redeploy used power equipment. These projects show that record.

  • USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
  • MAN redeployment, Iraq: USP&E moved a stranded 32 MW MAN plant, plus two surplus MAN generators, across four countries to an industrial buyer facing 12 to 18 month lead times for new engines. Read the case study.
  • Zondereinde platinum mine, South Africa: USP&E supplied, packaged and serviced six zero-hour surplus Wabtec GE16V250 gensets, giving the mine 25 MW of base-load power through Eskom load shedding. Read the case study.

HowTo: Check Used GT Coupling and Alignment Evidence

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share the alignment reports, coupling records and vibration data. 2. Receive a plain-language finding on the condition of the train. 3. Price the risk, then re-align and test before final acceptance.

  1. Ask for the latest alignment report with dates, method, readings and the targets used.
  2. Request coupling inspection records, including any replaced parts, bolting and lubrication.
  3. Review vibration history for signs of misalignment, such as high axial or twice-speed readings.
  4. Check how the unit was disconnected and whether the alignment was recorded before removal.
  5. Compare the evidence with a remanufactured GE Frame 6B or other used/new gas turbines.
  6. Plan a full re-alignment with thermal growth allowances at installation before acceptance.

FAQ: Used GT Coupling and Alignment Evidence

What alignment records should I ask for on a used gas turbine?

USP&E asks for the latest alignment report for each coupling, showing the date, method, readings, targets and final values. It also asks for earlier reports, shim changes and any notes on soft feet or foundation movement. Missing targets or final values should affect your price or terms.

Why does thermal growth matter for alignment?

USP&E sets alignment with planned offsets because turbines, gears and generators grow by different amounts when hot. If cold alignment ignores that growth, the train runs misaligned at full temperature. That raises vibration and bearing loads and shortens the life of couplings and gears.

How does misalignment show up in vibration data?

USP&E looks for high axial vibration, strong readings at twice running speed and uneven bearing temperatures either side of a coupling. Those signs do not prove misalignment alone, but together with alignment records they give a strong picture of how the train has been running.

Should I re-align a used turbine even if the records look good?

USP&E always re-aligns a used turbine at installation. Transport, new foundations and reconnection all change the alignment, so earlier values cannot simply be trusted. A recorded alignment with thermal growth offsets and a vibration check at load should be part of acceptance.

Where are USP&E’s offices for used turbine train checks?

USP&E carries out used turbine checks from Johannesburg and Cape Town, with engineers who reach units across Africa. London supports contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville back US turbine sourcing and engineering, and Wuxi follows up couplings and equipment made in China.

Has USP&E delivered refurbished or redeployed turbines before?

USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also include a stranded 32 MW MAN plant redeployed to Iraq and surplus Wabtec gensets packaged for Zondereinde mine.

Is USP&E a broker for used turbines?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E inspects, refurbishes, installs and maintains turbines with its own engineers, so the team that reads your alignment evidence is the same team that aligns the train at installation and answers for how it runs.

How fast can USP&E review coupling and alignment evidence?

USP&E can start reading your alignment reports, coupling records and vibration data as soon as you share them. Engineers flag the most serious concerns first, so you can ask the seller the right questions before the deal moves forward or the price is agreed.
