Used GT Hot Section Evidence

You can find a used gas turbine at a tempting number, but the hot section decides what you actually bought. Combustors, transition pieces, nozzles and first-stage blades carry most of the wear, and they are the parts a seller is least keen to show you clearly.

If you accept a unit without hard hot-section evidence, you risk a surprise repair bill, months of delay and a machine that trips or derates soon after you energise it. A cheap turbine that needs a full hot-section rebuild is not cheap, and the lost schedule can strand your whole project.

USP&E Helps You Read Used GT Hot-Section Evidence

We understand that you need capacity quickly and that used machines are often the fastest route. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers inspect, rebuild, install and operate used turbines, so we know which evidence matters and which photos are hiding something. We work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

Ask for Evidence You Can Actually Check

Request borescope stills and video for combustors, fuel nozzles, transition pieces and first-stage nozzles and blades. Each file should be dated, show the probe position, and carry the unit serial number. Photos without context are marketing, not evidence.

Ask for the operating record too: fired hours, fired starts, trips from load and any periods of liquid-fuel firing. Starts and trips often consume hot-section life faster than steady running, so a low-hours unit with many starts can be more worn than it looks.

Get the repair history: which parts were replaced or repaired, when, by whom and to what scope. A clean record with gaps of several years is a question, not an answer.

Read the Hot Section Like an Inspector

On combustors and transition pieces, look for cracking, burn-through and wear at seals and supports. On nozzles and blades, look for coating loss, erosion, tip rub, cooling-hole blockage and impact damage. Coating condition matters because once the base metal is exposed, deterioration speeds up.

If you are comparing several gas turbine generators from different sellers, hold every unit to the same evidence standard. Cross-check what you see against the OEM inspection intervals and life limits for that model. If the unit is close to a hot-gas-path or major inspection, the price should reflect that work, or the seller should complete it before you accept the turbine.

Reject units where serials do not match, media is undated or the coating condition is not described. You lose nothing by walking away from a unit you cannot verify.

Budget Cover and Plan the Next Step

Hot-section findings often add weeks of work. Budget cover so your project does not wait: a remanufactured GE Frame 6B or verified used/new gas turbines can carry load while repairs finish, and natural gas engines/stations can support smaller or auxiliary loads in the meantime.

If your demand will grow towards data-centre or compute load, leave commercial room for it. AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute can follow later, including blocks such as the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA, under one hyperscale EPC/O&M team.

Finally, hand the full evidence pack into your EPC and O&M teams. Warranty terms, spare strategy and the first inspection after start-up all depend on what you found before you paid.

Proof from Recent Used Generator Projects

You want proof that USP&E has rebuilt and delivered used turbines that run as promised. These projects show that record.

  • USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
  • Zondereinde platinum mine, South Africa: USP&E supplied, packaged and serviced six zero-hour surplus Wabtec GE16V250 gensets, giving the mine 25 MW of base-load power through Eskom load shedding. Read the case study.
  • NEOM, Saudi Arabia: USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface, and the client reported savings of over $10 million. Read the case study.

HowTo: Verify Used GT Hot Sections

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share the seller’s borescope media, hours, starts and repair records under NDA. 2. Receive an evidence review, red flags and a cover plan. 3. Accept, rebuild or walk away, then run the unit under accountable O&M.

  1. Demand borescope stills and video of combustors, nozzles and first-stage blades.
  2. Cross-check firing hours, starts and previous repair scope against OEM life limits.
  3. Reject units without dated photographs, serial matches and clear coating condition notes.
  4. Budget a remanufactured GE Frame 6B or verified used/new gas turbines as cover if hot-section work slips.
  5. Leave commercial room for later blocks such as the new FX-45 when your load grows.
  6. Hand the evidence pack into EPC and O&M so warranty and spare strategy stay aligned.

FAQ: Used GT Hot Section Evidence

What hot-section evidence should you demand for a used gas turbine?

USP&E asks for dated borescope stills and video of combustors, fuel nozzles, transition pieces and first-stage nozzles and blades, each tied to the unit serial. You also need fired hours, starts, trips and repair history before the evidence means anything.

Why do starts matter as much as hours?

USP&E treats starts and trips as major life drivers for the hot section. Each start and trip puts thermal stress on hot parts. A unit with low hours but many starts can be closer to a hot-gas-path inspection than its hour meter suggests.

What are the warning signs in hot-section photos?

USP&E looks for cracking, burn-through, coating loss, erosion, tip rub, blocked cooling holes and impact damage. Missing serials, undated files and vague coating notes are warning signs too. If you cannot verify the media, you should not accept the unit.

What if the hot section needs repair after purchase?

USP&E budgets cover so the repair does not stall your project. A remanufactured GE Frame 6B or verified used/new gas turbines can carry your main load while repairs finish, and natural gas engines/stations can cover smaller loads. You agree the cover before you pay.

Where are USP&E’s offices for used turbine inspections?

USP&E anchors used turbine inspection work in Johannesburg and Cape Town, with engineers who can witness borescope work and check serials. London structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi supports China supply chain and manufacturing. Every office works from the same project file.

Has USP&E delivered used gas turbines before?

USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also include NEOM and other projects where accountable EPC and O&M turned verified used equipment into firm power. You can read each case study and judge the evidence yourself.

Is USP&E a broker for used gas turbines?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power plants with its own engineers and project managers, so the team that reviews your hot-section evidence stays accountable once the unit runs. You deal with one accountable team from first review to O&M.

How fast can USP&E respond to a used GT evidence review?

USP&E can start reviewing borescope media, hours and repair records as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag the red flags first, so you can stop a bad purchase early, then complete the full review and cover plan.
