Those auxiliaries are where cheap units turn expensive. A corroded lube oil cooler, a fire system that cannot be recertified or a fuel skid stripped for parts can delay commissioning by months and add costs you never planned for. Buy without auxiliary evidence and you risk a turbine that is sound but cannot start, run or pass inspection.
USP&E Guides You Through the Whole Package, Not Just the Core
We know the auxiliaries rarely get the attention in a sale that the core engine does. USP&E has bought, refurbished and installed power equipment since 2002, with 150+ power projects and 25,000 MW contracted, and our 400+ engineers and project managers inspect used packages skid by skid. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker. Because we install and run what we recommend under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems, with FCPA and OFAC controls, our auxiliary findings become our own commissioning plan.
List Every Auxiliary System Before You Inspect
The gas turbine package you are buying is a set of systems that only work together. Start by listing them: lube oil with its pumps, coolers, filters and tank; the fuel gas or liquid fuel skid; fire protection and gas detection; enclosure ventilation and heating; the inlet filter house; the starting system; and any water wash, cooling water or hydraulic skids. Each one needs its own evidence.
Ask for the drawings, bills of material and test records for each skid, not just the engine logbook. Then check that your package is complete. Units that sat in a yard or changed hands often lose instruments, valves, cables or entire panels to other projects, and a missing part on a skid can be harder to source than a turbine blade.
Know What Good Evidence Looks Like for Each Skid
For the lube oil system, look for recent oil analysis, cooler cleaning or pressure test records, pump overhaul history and evidence the tank was drained and preserved. For fuel skids, you want valve and filter records, leak test results and confirmation of which fuel the skid was configured for. Inspect for corrosion at welds, flanges and supports, because skids are often stored outside even when the turbine was covered.
Fire protection deserves special care. Extinguishing agents, cylinders, detectors and control panels carry certification and service dates, and the codes at your site may not accept equipment certified elsewhere. Gas detection heads age. Find out early whether the system can be recertified or needs replacing, because that answer can change your whole budget.
Your electrical and control wiring on the skids should be checked for damage, rodent activity and moisture. Pump and fan motors need insulation tests, and every instrument should be calibrated or replaced before first fire.
Cost the Gaps and Protect the Auxiliaries in Transit
Once you have the evidence, cost each weak skid yourself: refurbish, replace or accept. Compare that total with alternatives such as a remanufactured GE Frame 6B or other used/new gas turbines that come with complete, documented packages. A cheaper core with tired auxiliaries is often the more expensive buy once refurbishment is added. Your gas turbine generators only earn money when every auxiliary works.
Protect what you buy. Preserve and crate your skids with the turbine, tag every loose item and keep a packing list that matches the evidence file. If the power will later serve buyers of AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators or gas turbines for compute, or sit beside natural gas engines/stations and modular gas turbine blocks, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz with capacity slots from 2028, that file supports one hyperscale EPC/O&M team.
USP&E Offices Serving Used Generator Buyers
Southern Africa is home base. USP&E’s Executive HQ in Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) owns engineering, procurement and project controls for your used gas turbine purchase, and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) backs it with design and commissioning support.
Equipment and finance for preserved used gas turbines and gensets draw on the wider network: London (162-168 Regent Street) supports structuring and finance, Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) link you to US supply and engineering, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) covers China sourcing and manufacturing.
For your used gas turbine purchase, inspectors from Johannesburg can walk every skid at the seller’s yard and test motors and instruments, and those findings decide how preserved used gas turbines and gensets are crated for shipping. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and is ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
USP&E Track Record for Used Generator
You want proof that used and surplus generation can be inspected, moved and returned to service. These USP&E projects show that record.
- USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
- MAN redeployment, Iraq: USP&E moved a stranded 32 MW MAN plant, plus two surplus MAN generators, across four countries to an industrial buyer facing 12 to 18 month lead times for new engines. Read the case study.
- Zondereinde platinum mine, South Africa: USP&E supplied, packaged and serviced six zero-hour surplus Wabtec GE16V250 gensets, giving the mine 25 MW of base-load power through Eskom load shedding. Read the case study.
HowTo: Check the Auxiliary Skids on a Used Gas Turbine
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share the seller’s package list and records under NDA. 2. Receive a skid-by-skid evidence review with gaps and refurbishment costs. 3. Inspect, close the gaps and ship with an accountable commissioning plan.
- List every auxiliary system in the package: lube oil, fuel gas or liquid fuel, fire protection, ventilation, inlet, starting and cooling.
- Request the records, drawings and test certificates for each skid, not just for the core engine.
- Inspect pumps, coolers, tanks, valves, instruments and wiring for corrosion, missing parts and cannibalisation.
- Check that fire protection and gas detection can be recertified to the codes at your site.
- Price replacement or refurbishment of each weak skid before you sign, alongside options such as a remanufactured GE Frame 6B.
- Preserve and crate the auxiliaries with the turbine so nothing is lost between yard and site.
FAQ: Used GT Auxiliary Skids Evidence
Which auxiliary systems should I check on a used gas turbine?
USP&E checks the lube oil system, fuel gas or liquid fuel skid, fire protection and gas detection, enclosure ventilation, inlet filter house, starting system and any water wash, cooling or hydraulic skids. Each system needs its own records and inspection, because the turbine cannot run without all of them.
What evidence should a seller provide for the lube oil system?
USP&E asks for recent oil analysis, cooler cleaning or pressure test records, pump overhaul history and proof that the tank was drained and preserved. Inspectors also look for corrosion, missing instruments and signs that filters or valves were removed for use on another unit.
Can a used fire protection system be reused at my site?
USP&E checks certification and service dates for cylinders, agents, detectors and panels, then compares them with the codes that apply at your site. Some systems can be recertified while others must be replaced, and knowing which applies before purchase can change your budget significantly.
Where are USP&E’s offices that support used turbine inspections?
USP&E’s Executive HQ in Johannesburg owns engineering and inspection planning for used equipment, and Cape Town backs it with design and commissioning support. London supports structuring and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville link you to US supply and engineering, and Wuxi covers China sourcing and manufacturing.
Has USP&E delivered used and refurbished turbine projects before?
USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies include moving a stranded 32 MW MAN plant across four countries to an industrial buyer and packaging six zero-hour surplus Wabtec gensets for the Zondereinde platinum mine.
Is USP&E a broker for used gas turbines?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that inspects, refurbishes, ships, installs and operates used equipment, so the team reviewing your auxiliary skids is the same team that must commission them and keep them running.
How fast can USP&E respond to a used turbine inspection request?
USP&E can begin a desk review as soon as the seller’s package list and records arrive under NDA. Engineers flag missing evidence first, then plan a yard visit, and the overall timing depends on access to the unit and how complete the seller’s documents are.
Should I walk away from a turbine with weak auxiliaries?
USP&E costs each weak skid before giving that advice. A sound core with auxiliaries that can be refurbished may still be a good buy, but if fire protection, fuel and lube oil systems all need replacing, a complete documented package may work out cheaper once installation and delay are counted.
