Used GT Hot-Section Life Evidence
You have found a used gas turbine at an attractive price, and the listing shows hours and starts. What it does not show is the condition of the combustion liners, transition pieces, first-stage nozzles and blades, which is where most of a turbine’s remaining value lives.
If you buy without hot-section evidence, the risk is a major inspection due soon after delivery, parts with little life left or coating damage that forces an early overhaul. The bargain becomes a large, unplanned bill and a delay to the power your project was counting on.
USP&E as Your Guide Through Used Turbine Diligence
We know how much pressure a low asking price puts on your decision. Since 2002 USP&E has built 150+ power stations, supplied about 25 000 MW and guided projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified and work under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Read Hot-Section Life Like a Risk Clock
Ask for fired hours, starts, trips and the operating profile since the last hot gas path and major inspections. Peaking units that start often age differently from base-load units, and frequent trips from full load are hard on hot parts. Those numbers tell you where the unit sits in its maintenance cycle and when the next big inspection will fall due.
Then ask for the repair history of the hot parts themselves: which components are original, which were repaired, how many repair cycles each has seen and which shop did the work. Parts that have already been repaired several times may not be repairable again, which changes the cost of your next inspection.
Inspect the Metal, Not the Listing
A recent borescope inspection of the combustion section and turbine stages should be part of every serious offer. Look for coating loss, cracking, burn-through, tip rub and foreign object damage, and ask for the images, not just a summary. Where findings are unclear, a second opinion before purchase costs far less than a surprise after delivery.
Check the inspection scope carefully: what was seen, what was not accessible and why. Combine it with fuel history, because liquid fuel or poor gas quality accelerates hot-section wear. Your used/new gas turbines shortlist should rank units by the quality of this evidence.
Bridge Options and Growth Planning
A remanufactured GE Frame 6B still needs a clear statement of which hot parts were replaced or repaired, coating records and a post-reman borescope. Natural gas engines/stations can cover auxiliary or camp loads while the turbine file is completed, so your site keeps moving.
Gas turbine generators bought with clear hot-section evidence are easier to insure and finance. If your buyers include compute developers planning AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, keep interfaces open for larger blocks. The planning reference is modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028, and one contractor can carry growth into hyperscale EPC/O&M.
Whatever you buy, agree in writing what happens if the post-purchase inspection finds damage the seller’s evidence did not show. Clear responsibility before money moves protects you far better than arguments after the unit has shipped.
USP&E Offices Serving Used Generator Buyers
Southern Africa is home base. USP&E’s Executive HQ in Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) owns engineering, procurement and project controls for your used gas turbine purchase, and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) backs it with design and commissioning support.
Equipment and finance for preserved used gas turbines and gensets draw on the wider network: London (162-168 Regent Street) supports structuring and finance, Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) link you to US supply and engineering, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) covers China sourcing and manufacturing.
For a used turbine buyer, that means the engineers reviewing your borescope images can also arrange a second inspection, plan shipping and commission the unit, so the hot-section story stays in one file from offer to first fire. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. USP&E has guided projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries, and is ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
What USP&E Has Delivered for Used Generator Buyers
You want proof that USP&E can judge, refurbish and move turbines properly. These projects show refurbishment, zero-hour supply and complex redeployment.
- USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
- NEOM, Saudi Arabia: USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface, and the client reported savings of over $10 million. Read the case study.
- MAN redeployment, Iraq: USP&E moved a stranded 32 MW MAN plant, plus two surplus MAN generators, across four countries to an industrial buyer facing 12 to 18 month lead times for new engines. Read the case study.
HowTo: Build the equipment and delivery path
Your 3-step plan: 1. Send the seller’s hours, starts, repair history and borescope images. 2. Get an independent hot-section review with EPC and O&M options. 3. Buy with clear evidence, ship, commission and hand over to O&M.
- Define duty, frequency, fuel plan, and which hot-section risks dominate remaining life for candidate gas turbine generators.
- Compare verified used/new gas turbines, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, and natural gas engines/stations against that risk matrix.
- Request hot-section logs, borescope findings, hours, starts, trip logs, inspection findings, and logistics dimensions via the central inventory hub.
- Reserve growth interfaces for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, 50/60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028.
- Write inspection exclusions, coating plans, and O&M ownership into one Extreme Ownership matrix.
- Complete funding, shipping, insurance, and commissioning rehearsals before final selection.

FAQ: Used GT Hot-Section Life Evidence
Why demand hot-section life evidence on used gas turbines?
USP&E asks for hot-section evidence because liners, nozzles and blades hold much of a used turbine’s remaining value. Hours alone do not show coating loss, cracking or how many times parts have been repaired, and an early major inspection can cost far more than the discount you negotiated.
What hot-section records should a seller provide?
USP&E asks for fired hours, starts and trips since the last inspections, the operating profile, fuel history, component repair records with shop names and cycles, and recent borescope images. Missing records are a reason to inspect further or adjust the offer, not to guess.
Is a remanufactured GE Frame 6B exempt from hot-section evidence?
USP&E does not treat a remanufactured GE Frame 6B as exempt. You still need a list of replaced and repaired hot parts, coating records and a borescope after the work, because a reman label without supporting evidence leaves your lender and operators uncertain about remaining life.
Where are USP&E offices that support used equipment buyers?
USP&E’s Executive HQ in Johannesburg owns engineering, inspection planning and project controls, backed by design and commissioning support in Cape Town. London supports finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville link you to US supply and engineering, and Wuxi covers China sourcing for balance-of-plant.
Has USP&E delivered used or refurbished turbines before?
USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also include three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 turbines for NEOM and a stranded 32 MW MAN plant redeployed across four countries.
How do I avoid broker pitfalls when buying used turbines?
USP&E avoids broker pitfalls by working as a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker. The team inspects the unit, reviews the hot-section evidence, plans logistics and commissions the turbine, so someone accountable stands behind the purchase once it reaches your site.
How fast can USP&E respond to a hot-section review?
USP&E can give a first opinion as soon as you send hours, starts, repair records and borescope images. If a new inspection is needed, timing depends on access to the unit, the seller’s cooperation and the location, which is usually the longest part of the process.
Do natural gas engines appear in used turbine programmes?
USP&E often pairs natural gas engines/stations with a used turbine purchase. Engines cover camp loads, auxiliaries or black-start while the turbine is inspected, shipped and commissioned, so your site keeps working without rushing a decision that still needs hot-section evidence.
Know the Hot Section Before You Pay
Get the evidence right and your used turbine arrives with known remaining life and a planned inspection schedule. Get it wrong and the first borescope after delivery becomes a major overhaul. USP&E will help you buy with clear evidence.
