Used GT Compressor Wash Evidence
You are about to buy a used gas turbine, and the seller has sent hours, starts and a few screenshots of wash logs. What you cannot see yet is how badly the compressor has fouled, how it was washed and whether the output the seller quotes still holds.
If you buy on hours alone, the risk is a unit that arrives short of rated output, needs a compressor overhaul you did not budget for, or fails your lender’s review. A cheap machine becomes an expensive delay when the air path story falls apart after delivery.
USP&E as Your Guide Through Used Turbine Diligence
We know how tempting a low asking price looks when your schedule is tight. Since 2002 USP&E has built 150+ power stations, supplied about 25 000 MW and guided projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Read Compressor Wash History Like a Risk Clock
Ask for dated wash records covering online and offline washes, the detergent used, water quality and the operating conditions before and after each wash. A healthy record shows output and compressor discharge pressure recovering after each offline wash. A record where recovery shrinks over time points to permanent fouling, erosion or coating loss that washing can no longer fix.
Compare the wash interval with the site where the unit ran. A turbine from a dusty or coastal site that was rarely washed has a different story from one on clean pipeline gas with a disciplined programme. Your used/new gas turbines shortlist should rank units by evidence quality, not only by hours.
Confirm the Air Path With Inspection, Not Screenshots
Wash logs only tell part of the story, so pair them with a borescope inspection of the compressor stages, inlet guide vanes and bellmouth. Look for blade tip erosion, leading edge damage, coating loss and deposits that remain after washing. Ask what was excluded from the inspection and why.
Check the inlet filter house too. Torn media, bypass gaps or missing weather hoods explain heavy fouling and will repeat on your site unless corrected. Gas turbine generators bought with a clear air path record are easier to insure and finance, and easier for your operators to run with confidence.
Bridge Options and Growth Planning
A remanufactured GE Frame 6B still needs a transparent wash file, a reman scope statement and a compressor condition report. Natural gas engines/stations can carry auxiliary or camp loads while the main turbine file is completed, which keeps your site moving without rushing the purchase.
If your buyers include compute developers looking at AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, keep civil and electrical interfaces open for larger blocks. The planning reference is modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028, and the same team can carry that growth into hyperscale EPC/O&M.
USP&E Teams Behind Your Used Generator Site
Remote sites need people who know frontier work. USP&E runs your used gas turbine purchase from Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineers plan mobilisation, spares and site supervision for projects far from the nearest service shop.
Further back in the chain, London (162-168 Regent Street) handles financing and contract structure for preserved used gas turbines and gensets; Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) secure US equipment, parts and engineering support; and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) keeps Chinese-made switchgear and balance-of-plant moving.
For a used turbine buyer, that network means the engineer reviewing your wash logs and borescope report can also arrange the inspection, the shipping plan and the commissioning crew, so the purchase file stays in one place. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. That team has guided projects in 85+ countries, delivered 35+ completed utility-scale projects and runs 18 live projects in 11 countries, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
Proof from Recent Used Generator Projects
You want proof that USP&E can judge and deliver used or surplus machines. These projects show refurbishment, surplus supply and redeployment done properly.
- USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
- Zondereinde platinum mine, South Africa: USP&E supplied, packaged and serviced six zero-hour surplus Wabtec GE16V250 gensets, giving the mine 25 MW of base-load power through Eskom load shedding. Read the case study.
- NEOM, Saudi Arabia: USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface, and the client reported savings of over $10 million. Read the case study.
HowTo: Build the equipment and delivery path
Your 3-step plan: 1. Send the seller’s wash logs, hours, starts and inspection reports. 2. Get an independent air-path review with EPC and O&M options. 3. Buy with a clear file, ship, commission and hand over to O&M.
- Define duty, frequency, fuel plan, and which compressor-fouling risks dominate remaining life for candidate gas turbine generators.
- Compare verified used/new gas turbines, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, and natural gas engines/stations against that risk matrix.
- Request wash logs, fouling findings, hours, starts, trip logs, inspection findings, and logistics dimensions via the central inventory hub.
- Reserve growth interfaces for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, 50/60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028.
- Write inspection exclusions, wash chemistry plans, and O&M ownership into one Extreme Ownership matrix.
- Complete funding, shipping, insurance, and commissioning rehearsals before final selection.

FAQ: Used GT Compressor Wash Evidence
Why demand compressor-wash evidence on used gas turbines?
USP&E asks for wash evidence because compressor fouling and erosion decide how much output a used turbine can still deliver. Hours and starts do not show whether washes restored performance or whether recovery has been shrinking, which signals permanent damage that could cost you an overhaul shortly after purchase.
What does a good compressor wash record look like?
USP&E looks for dated online and offline washes, detergent and water quality data, and output or discharge pressure readings before and after each wash. A good record shows consistent recovery over time. Gaps, undated entries or shrinking recovery mean you need a borescope inspection before agreeing a price.
Is a remanufactured GE Frame 6B exempt from wash evidence?
USP&E does not treat any remanufactured GE Frame 6B as exempt. You still need the reman scope statement, compressor condition report, preservation history and wash records since the work was done, because a reman stamp without supporting evidence leaves your lender and your operators guessing about the air path.
Where are USP&E offices that support used equipment buyers?
USP&E supports buyers from its Johannesburg and Cape Town offices, which lead engineering, inspection planning and commissioning. London handles finance and contracts, Colorado Springs and Knoxville secure US equipment and parts, and Wuxi keeps Chinese-made switchgear and balance-of-plant moving, so your purchase is covered end to end.
Has USP&E delivered used or refurbished turbines before?
USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also include six zero-hour surplus Wabtec GE16V250 gensets for the Zondereinde platinum mine and three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 turbines for NEOM.
How do I avoid broker pitfalls when buying used turbines?
USP&E avoids broker pitfalls by working as a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker. That means inspecting the unit, checking the evidence, planning logistics and commissioning it, so you are not left holding a purchase that nobody is accountable for once it reaches your site.
How fast can USP&E respond to a used turbine review?
USP&E can start reviewing as soon as you send the seller’s logs, hours, starts and any inspection reports. A first opinion on the evidence comes quickly, and the full timeline depends on access to the unit for borescope inspection, document quality and the shipping route.
Do natural gas engines appear in used turbine programmes?
USP&E often pairs natural gas engines/stations with a used turbine purchase. Engines can cover camp loads, auxiliaries or black-start while the turbine is inspected, shipped and commissioned, which lets you keep your site running without rushing a purchase that still needs evidence.
Buy the Turbine, Not the Story
Get the evidence right and your used turbine arrives with known output, a clear overhaul plan and a file your lender accepts. Get it wrong and a bargain becomes a stranded asset waiting for parts. USP&E will help you buy with your eyes open.
