Used GT Generator Insulation Evidence

You found a used gas turbine at a price that looks right, and the turbine records look tidy. But the generator is half of what you are buying, and its windings may have spent years in a damp yard, a coastal warehouse or a container with no heater running.

If the insulation is weak, you will not discover it on a photo. You discover it at first energisation, when a failed test, a ground fault or a winding failure turns a bargain into months of delay, a rewind bill and a project that misses its power date.

USP&E as Your Guide to Buying Used With Evidence

We understand the pressure to move fast when a good unit appears. Since 2002 USP&E has built 150+ power stations and supplied about 25 000 MW, and our 400+ engineers and project managers review used equipment the way they would review their own. We work under ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

Ask for the Generator File, Not Just the Turbine File

Sellers lead with turbine hours and starts because that is what you usually ask for. Ask equally hard for the generator: nameplate data, rewind or rewedge history, past insulation resistance and polarisation index results, partial discharge records if available, and any history of ground faults or overheating alarms. Gaps in the file tell you something too.

For used/new gas turbines and for a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, the generator file should show who did each test, with what instrument and at what temperature and humidity. If you get results without conditions, you cannot compare them, and a single good reading taken on a dry day tells you very little about the trend you are buying into.

Read Insulation Tests Without Guesswork

Insulation resistance and polarisation index tests are simple, but interpreting them takes care. Correct your readings to a reference temperature, compare phases with each other and look at the trend over several tests. A low polarisation index often points to moisture or contamination that drying may fix, while a falling trend over years can signal ageing that drying will not cure.

Where the value justifies it, add winding resistance, tan delta or partial discharge testing and a borescope look at end windings. These tests cost far less than a failed energisation. If results are marginal, agree a drying plan and retest before final payment rather than accepting promises.

Protect the Windings Through Storage and Shipping

Moisture is your enemy between the seller’s yard and your foundation. Keep space heaters energised where possible, use desiccant and sealed covers for shipping, and record humidity in the container. A long sea voyage through hot, humid routes can undo a good test result in weeks.

Your evidence pack should also prepare for the next step. Natural gas engines/stations, gas turbine generators and future modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1 blocks, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz with capacity slots from 2028, all benefit from the same receiving tests. If buyers of AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators or gas turbines for compute later take your power, they will ask for that record under hyperscale EPC/O&M.

Global Offices Behind Your Used Generator Programme

Your plant does not run on head-office time. USP&E anchors your used gas turbine purchase in Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineering, project controls and commissioning support sit, close to the African sites USP&E has powered for years.

When preserved used gas turbines and gensets must be financed, sourced or shipped, London (162-168 Regent Street) structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) supports China supply chain and manufacturing.

For a used turbine purchase, that means someone can witness insulation tests at the seller’s yard, follow the unit through shipping and retest it on arrival, so you are not paying the balance on the strength of a photograph. USP&E Track Record for Used Generator

You want proof that used and surplus equipment can be bought, moved and put back to work safely. These USP&E projects show exactly that.

  • USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
  • MAN redeployment, Iraq: USP&E moved a stranded 32 MW MAN plant, plus two surplus MAN generators, across four countries to an industrial buyer facing 12 to 18 month lead times for new engines. Read the case study.
  • Zondereinde platinum mine, South Africa: USP&E supplied, packaged and serviced six zero-hour surplus Wabtec GE16V250 gensets, giving the mine 25 MW of base-load power through Eskom load shedding. Read the case study.

HowTo: Build the equipment and delivery path

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share the listing, seller file and your intended duty under NDA. 2. Get an evidence review with test scope, gaps and a drying plan. 3. Witness tests, ship protected and commission with O&M support.

  1. List the duty, budget, and schedule, and identify which used gas turbine generators are under consideration.
  2. Compare a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used/new gas turbines, natural gas engines/stations, and new modular options on generator condition as well as price.
  3. Request insulation trend data, rotor tests, rewind history, storage conditions, and logistics dimensions through the central inventory hub.
  4. Note the planning reference modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, 50/60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028, if later new capacity is expected.
  5. Agree heater, dry-out, transport protection, and post-install test steps with named O&M owners.
  6. Complete commercial terms, permits, funding, and baseline electrical testing before final commitment.

FAQ: Used GT Generator Insulation Evidence

Why should I test generator insulation before buying a used gas turbine?

USP&E tests generator insulation before purchase because the generator is half the value of a used turbine package. Weak windings are invisible in the photos and records you receive, and a failed test at first energisation can mean a rewind, months of delay and a missed power date for your project.

What insulation tests should be in the evidence pack?

USP&E expects insulation resistance and polarisation index results corrected to temperature, with test conditions and instruments recorded. For valuable units, winding resistance, tan delta, partial discharge and a borescope inspection of end windings add confidence, and trends across several tests matter more than one reading.

Where are USP&E’s offices that can support a used equipment purchase?

USP&E supports used equipment buyers from its Executive HQ in Johannesburg and its Cape Town office, which carry engineering and commissioning. Colorado Springs and Knoxville reach US equipment yards and engineering, London supports contracts and finance, and Wuxi follows up China supply chain and manufacturing.

Has USP&E delivered used or surplus generation projects before?

USP&E has delivered used and surplus projects, and has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies include redeploying a 32 MW MAN plant to Iraq and six Wabtec gensets for the Zondereinde platinum mine.

Is USP&E a broker for used generators?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that inspects, refurbishes, ships, installs and commissions equipment, so the team that reviews the insulation evidence is also responsible for getting the unit energised and running on your site.

How fast can USP&E respond to a used turbine listing?

USP&E can review a seller’s file as soon as you share it and tell you which records and tests are missing. Witness testing and inspections are then scheduled around the seller’s yard access, travel and equipment availability, so good units can be secured without skipping the evidence.

Can low insulation readings be fixed?

USP&E often resolves low readings caused by moisture or contamination through controlled drying and cleaning, followed by retesting. A falling trend over several years or damage found during inspection may point to ageing that drying will not cure, which changes the price and the plan for the unit.

How should a used generator be stored and shipped?

USP&E recommends energised space heaters where possible, sealed covers, desiccant and humidity logging during storage and shipping. Long sea voyages through hot, humid routes can undo good test results, so the unit should be retested on arrival before it is placed on its foundation.
