Used GT Load Gearbox Evidence

You are looking at a used gas turbine that seems like a bargain, and the seller’s file focuses on turbine hours and hot-section work. But many industrial turbines drive their generator through a load gearbox, and that gearbox can decide whether your purchase runs for years or fails in months.

A worn tooth, a damaged bearing or a cracked casing hidden inside the gearbox can mean a long outage, a costly repair and lead times that strand your project. If you only discover it after delivery, the risk and the repair bill are yours alone.

USP&E as Your Guide to Used Turbines Without Hidden Surprises

We understand why a good price makes you want to move quickly. Since 2002 USP&E has built 150+ power stations and supplied about 25 000 MW, and our 400+ engineers and project managers inspect used equipment from intake to generator terminals, including the parts sellers prefer not to discuss. We work under ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

Give the Gearbox Its Own Diligence Line

The gearbox deserves its own line in your diligence checklist. It carries the full output of the turbine at high speed, and its condition depends on lubrication quality, alignment, load history and how the unit was stored. A turbine with a fresh hot-section overhaul can still be coupled to a gearbox near the end of its life.

Ask whether the gearbox is original, when it was last opened, what was found and what was replaced. Check that its rating suits your intended duty and frequency, especially if you plan to run the unit at a different load profile from the way the previous operator ran it. Mismatched ratings shorten gearbox life quickly.

Request the Right Records and Inspect When Records Are Thin

Useful records include lube oil analysis trends, vibration history with spectra, bearing temperature logs, inspection reports with photographs and any repair or tooth-contact records. Rising iron or particle counts in oil, increasing vibration at gear-mesh frequency or rising bearing temperatures are warning signs you should not ignore.

When records are thin, inspect. A borescope through inspection ports can show tooth surface condition, pitting and scuffing. Oil samples taken during a seller’s run give a current picture. Where value justifies it, open the casing for a tooth-contact check and bearing inspection before you pay the balance, and agree in advance who pays if damage is found.

Compare Drive Trains and Plan for Compute Buyers

Not every turbine uses a load gearbox. A remanufactured GE Frame 6B and other used/new gas turbines differ in drive-train design, so compare them on the full train: turbine, gearbox if fitted, coupling and generator. Natural gas engines/stations and gas turbine generators each bring their own lubrication and alignment needs.

If your power will later serve compute loads, buyers of AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute will ask for drive-train evidence. Plan your site with room for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1 blocks, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz with capacity slots from 2028, under one hyperscale EPC/O&M team.

Proof from Recent Used Generator Projects

You want proof that used and surplus generation equipment can be put back to work reliably. These USP&E projects show exactly that.

  • USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
  • Zondereinde platinum mine, South Africa: USP&E supplied, packaged and serviced six zero-hour surplus Wabtec GE16V250 gensets, giving the mine 25 MW of base-load power through Eskom load shedding. Read the case study.
  • NEOM, Saudi Arabia: USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface, and the client reported savings of over $10 million. Read the case study.

HowTo: Build the equipment and delivery path

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share the listing, seller records and intended duty under NDA. 2. Receive a drive-train evidence review with inspection scope. 3. Witness inspection, ship protected and commission with O&M support.

  1. Request gearbox and coupling nameplates, maintenance history, oil analysis, vibration trends, and alignment records for each candidate.
  2. Compare a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, other used/new gas turbines, and natural gas engines/stations on drive-train evidence, not price alone.
  3. Shortlist units at the central inventory hub and flag every record gap for inspection or pricing.
  4. Keep modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1 in the long-term plan, 50/60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028.
  5. Agree a written inspection scope covering tooth contact, bearings, oil sampling, and coupling condition, then review the report.
  6. Plan installation alignment, run-in checks, and baseline records before commissioning and handover.

FAQ: Used GT Load Gearbox Evidence

Why does the load gearbox matter when buying a used gas turbine?

USP&E inspects the load gearbox because it carries the turbine’s full output at high speed and can fail independently of the hot section. A worn tooth or damaged bearing can cause a long outage and costly repair, so the gearbox needs its own diligence line.

Which gearbox records should I request from the seller?

USP&E asks for lube oil analysis trends, vibration history with spectra, bearing temperature logs, inspection reports with photographs and repair or tooth-contact records. Rising particle counts, gear-mesh vibration or bearing temperatures are warning signs worth investigating before you purchase the unit.

Where are USP&E’s offices that support used turbine inspections?

USP&E supports used turbine buyers from its Executive HQ in Johannesburg, with Cape Town adding design, commissioning and project depth. London structures finance and contracts, Colorado Springs and Knoxville connect you to US equipment and engineering, and Wuxi follows up China manufacturing.

Has USP&E delivered used and refurbished turbine projects before?

USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies include six zero-hour surplus Wabtec gensets for the Zondereinde platinum mine and three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 turbines for NEOM.

Is USP&E a broker for used gas turbines?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that inspects, refurbishes, ships, installs and operates generation equipment, so the team assessing your gearbox is also accountable for the unit running reliably once it reaches your site.

How fast can USP&E respond to a used turbine inspection request?

USP&E can review seller records as soon as you share them and identify which inspections are needed. Witness visits for borescope work and oil sampling are scheduled around seller access and travel, so you can move quickly without skipping the gearbox evidence.

Can a borescope inspection replace opening the gearbox?

USP&E uses borescope inspection to check tooth surfaces, pitting and scuffing through inspection ports, which often gives enough evidence. Where records are poor or findings are doubtful, opening the casing for tooth-contact and bearing checks is the safer choice before final payment.

Do all gas turbines use a load gearbox?

USP&E reminds buyers that not every gas turbine uses a load gearbox, because drive-train design differs between models and generator speeds. Comparing units on the full train, including turbine, gearbox if fitted, coupling and generator, gives a fairer picture of risk.
